Today's Cannery Trip

I had fun today at the cannery. It was my first time and before today, I had the idea that it was a huge involved process, but it was actually very simple to get there, buy the food, can the food, and take it home, and I'm sure I'll be going back again soon. I brought home 3 cans of wheat and 2 cans of flour that I canned with my own two little hands.

Ward members who went were: Blaine & Marilyn B., Stan & Susan B. (and Stan's brother and sister-in-law from another stake), Michelle B., Jeremy C., Franca J., Robert & Lisa J., David M. and Dan W. - a good little group. We were joined by other area members, and canned wheat, flour, rice, sugar, hot chocolate, quick oats and, my personal favorite (NOT), dry milk. For that, we had to wear surgical masks because when you pour it, it floats around forever in the air; but we had fun asking each other for scalpels and joking that by breathing in the milk dust, we were getting our daily supply of calcium. I kicked myself for not bringing my camera.

Now that I know how easy it is, I'll be going back more frequently than once every 8 years! Hope you're doing well with the stake's goal of all members having at least 3 months of food storage by July 24. The cannery, located adjacent to Deseret Industries in Portland, is open Tuesdays and Thursdays for walk-ins from 10 AM to 2 PM, and Saturday mornings by appointment. Teresa G. is our ward emergency preparedness specialist.

Cannery Recipe Blog

This is a blog I found today, dedicated to recipes using food storage products. What better timing, considering our next cannery trip is tomorrow (June 24)? We'll be meeting at the stake center at 8:00 AM sharp to ride down together.

Let's Get Fit!!

I heard a lot of talk about getting out and exercising last night at Enrichment Night. Here's your chance to get started! Starting this Saturday, we want to start a walking group. Meet at 4th Plain and Falk Rd (Discovery Trail) at 9:30 am. For now, it will just be on Saturdays; but maybe once the group gets more established, we can add more days to the schedule. And maybe as we get more in shape, we can up the pace to jogging! But one thing at a time--let's just get going! See you there!

ENRICHMENT NIGHT TONIGHT

OK - I want to see all of you there tonight at the church at 6:30. There will be salads galore - I am making my famous jello - and we'll have a wonderful class taught by the very entertaining Leann H. about provident living. This is a presentation she gave to all the Relief Society presidencies of our stake, and it was so incredibly mind-boggling, she was asked to come and present it tonight.

So DON'T MISS IT - don't even be late. 6:30 at the church :) Come on, you know you should!

Ward Updates (You heard it here)

On Friday evening...

Those of us who attended the ward pizza party activity were good to go for dinner. Lots of pizza, salads, desserts, and pop were consumed, and the ward Young Women did very well at their silent service auction (read about it here on White Shores' blog) and made quite a bit of money for Girls' Camp. The kids played games and the adults yakked their little hearts out. I was very impressed by the number of friends and neighbors of ward members who attended - I seriously didn't recognize half the people in the Cultural Hall. Way to do the missionary work!

On Sunday...

Brother Cary C., newly transplanted as the bishopric 2nd counselor, was off to a smashing start, conducting Sacrament meeting for the first time. Hubby and I enjoyed the "waving" story. Very cute!

Sister Deanna E. was sustained to two callings at once - what a brave lady. She'll serve as the Relief Society Humanitarian Specialist and the Ward Singles Representative. Hats off to you, girl!

Don't forget: Enrichment Night is Thursday, June 15. (I previously said June 8 but I've since been corrected!) I happen to know there will be food involved, so right away, I'm there, dude. See you then!

It occurs to me that I ended all of the above items with a short, exclamation-point-containing sentence. Here's another one!

:)
